A Liverpool dentist who is campaigning for people to understand the risks of cosmetic dentistry says that the advice of National Smile Month could help people to realise the damage they could be inflicting on their natural teeth.

Dr. Andrew Healy, of Pall Mall Dental in Liverpool city centre, says that the short-term bright white Hollywood smile is a high price to pay when teeth are ruined in the process.

He’s backing National Smile Month, which launches on Monday May 18 and runs until Thursday June 18, and is celebrating its 39th year of boosting oral health.

Organised by the British Dental Health Foundation the initiative is the UK’s largest and longest-running oral health campaign raising awareness of important health issues and making a positive difference to the oral health of millions of people throughout the UK.

Andrew Healy said: “People should always remember the basics ... brush twice a day, cut down on sugary food and drinks and go to the dentist for a check up regularly to keep your teeth and mouth in optimum health.

“However, within the trends of our society we are now seeing people undertaking cosmetic dentistry procedures in the same way as they would change their hair colour.

“I cannot stress enough how certain cosmetic procedures result in permanent, irreversible damage to the natural teeth and people are being duped by either sales people charging thousands for something not needed or people untrained in dentistry to undergo these procedures; it’s irresponsible.”

Dr. Andrew Healy, who founded Pall Mall Dental ten years ago to offer high quality private dental care, has just completed a two-year Masters degree in Advanced Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry from the University of Manchester where he was awarded a distinction.

He added: “I feel the benefits of aesthetic dentistry where skills embrace different dental treatments to ensure the very best functionality and aesthetics are being overlooked in the current climate.

“We are working with the patient’s natural teeth and consequently keeping them healthy for years to come.”

Pall Mall Dental is committed to improving oral health and as such is supporting the British Dental Health Foundation’s National Smile Month.
