National Theatre and the Liverpool Empire are celebrating Liverpool’s Light Night in support of Reading Counts with a special reading of Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time at Liverpool Central Library.
Light Night, which is returning this week for a sixth year, aims to increase the community’s engagement with arts and culture on Merseyside. Many of the city’s museums, galleries and public spaces will stay open late for a free arts and culture showcase and the streets will come to life with performances, light projections, exhibitions, walks, talks and interactive activities for all ages.
As part of campaign to make Liverpool the UK’s foremost reading city, City of Readers is encouraging groups and individuals to read Mark Haddon’s Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. To launch the Reading Counts initiative, there will be a live reading of the book at Central Library on Light Night
Beth from City of Readers said: “We’re supporting Liverpool secondary schools to set up reading groups. Many Liverpool maths teachers are being encouraged to be reading role models, enjoying a novel which includes their favourite subject. We have chosen a text with strong mathematical themes to engage readers who like solving puzzles, and who also enjoy maths. The choice of novel was also inspired by the upcoming visit of the National Theatre production of Curious based on the book, with the script written by Simon Stephens. We’re delighted to be working with the Empire Theatre on this initiative.”
In addition, Liverpool Empire are sending a ‘Curious Crew’ out into the city’s St George’s Cultural Quarter for Light Night who will help you spot some of the iconic chalk outlines of the dog. They will be reaching out to attenders of the festival with information about the upcoming award-winning production by the National Theatre and offering a secret code, which can be used to retrieve a special discount when booking for the show.
Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time was originally published in 2003. It was the winner of more than seventeen literary awards, including prizes in Japan, Holland and Italy as well as the Whitbread Book of the Year Award in the UK in 2004.
Light Night takes place on Friday May 15 from 16.00 onwards, and the live reading of The Curious Case of the Dog in the Night-time will take place at Central Library on Friday May 15 from 20.00 onwards.
