Comedy Review: Russell Howard - Round The World

Written By: Mark Armstrong

Format: Stand-Up
Genre: Comedy
Date: March 30 2017
Location: Liverpool Echo Arena, Liverpool, England

Returning to the stand-up stage for the first time since 2014, Russell Howard is once again touring the UK comedy circuit, and has brought his new Round The World show to Liverpool Echo Arena.

Russell, who has built up a large following not only in Britain but also across the globe, has a relaxed yet thought-provoking and outspoken style to his comedy delivery, meaning that he is more likely to make you laugh from telling stories and sharing opinions, as well as "potential" situations, than telling jokes; however, when he does have the audience laughing, it's loud, and often, as he comes up with many humorous scenarios and tales that, amazingly, did actually happen.

Tickets for the UK Tour will go on sale at 10am on 23 September 2016.

BBC One’s hugely popular entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing returns to TV screens later this month with a new exciting celebrity line-up and a host of breathtaking dance routines guaranteed to leave audiences spellbound. And Strictly's Live Tour is no different - this must-see event for fans of all ages brings the magic of the TV show to an arena near you.

This year's tour will star TV Judges Len Goodman and Craig Revel Horwood. They will be joined on the judging panel by former Strictly professional dancer and winner of the 2006 series, Karen Hardy. The tour will also feature a brand new host, Countryfile's Anita Rani, who was a semi-finalist in the 2015 series and a contestant on this year’s live tour.

Craig Revel Horwood will direct the tour for the seventh year, creating all of the showbiz sparkle, breathtaking choreography and incredible live music that Strictly is famous for - audiences can experience everything that they love about the TV show live on stage.

Head Judge Len Goodman said: “The live tour always has such a great atmosphere and the 10th anniversary tour will definitely be one to remember, especially as this will come as I complete my final year on the TV series as Head Judge.  Rest assured audiences, this tour will be a ten from Len!”

Craig Revel Horwood added: “I am very pleased to be back on tour with legendary Len and also welcoming Karen to the tour’s judging panel. This 10th year is going to be bigger and better than ever before. We’ll be pulling out all the stops to make sure that this anniversary tour is the best yet!”

Guest Judge Karen Hardy said: “I couldn’t be more excited to be joining Len and Craig in the judging hot seat. Having seen the fantastic line-up for this year's TV series, I know that audiences around the country are going to be in for a real treat. I can't wait to get started!”

Host Anita Rani said: “I had such a great experience on the series and the tour, that I jumped at the opportunity to come back and host the tour. I had a taster as tour host last year when I stood in for Mel Giedroyc, which was so much fun. I'm really looking forward to being back in front of the lovely Strictly audiences to celebrate 10 years on the road!”

This entertainment extravaganza will star many of the celebrities and professional dancers from the hugely anticipated 14th BBC One series, as they take to the dance floor and recreate their most popular TV dance routines. Details of celebrities and professional dancers appearing on tour will be announced over the coming months.

The judges will provide their invaluable wisdom, advice and scores at each performance on tour. But not only are the celebrities and their dance partners competing for the judges’ scores, they will also be battling to win votes from the arena audiences, who can text vote via their mobile phones and ultimately have the power to decide who wins the coveted Glitterball Trophy at the end of each show.

The tour has received rave reviews since it began in 2008 and this year's live shows were no exception. The Sunday Telegraph heaped praise on the production and gave it a 5 star review, saying: “the Strictly juggernaut shows no sign of slowing down”. The Mail On Sunday and Metro agreed, both awarding glowing 4 star reviews. The Mail On Sunday said: “the overall standard of dancing was the highest I can recall”.

Last December, an audience of nearly 12 million viewers tuned in to watch the nail-biting Strictly Come Dancing Grand Final on BBC One, when The Wanted singer Jay McGuinness was crowned the winner with his professional dance partner Aliona Vilani. The television format, internationally known as Dancing with the Stars, is one of the most successful TV formats ever created and has been sold into over 50 countries around the world.

Duran Duran coming to Echo Arena in December

Written By: Mark Armstrong

Provided By: ACC Liverpool

Duran Duran have announced that they will perform a series of summer festivals, followed by a UK arena tour that kicks off in late November and finishes with a big tour finale on the banks of the Mersey here at Echo Arena on Saturday December 12.

Formed in Birmingham, England in 1978, Duran Duran is one of the most culturally influential and commercially successful bands of all time, topping the charts around the world over the past three decades and selling more than 100 million records worldwide. The band has been honored with multiple Grammy, BRIT, Ivor Novello, and MTV Video Music Lifetime Achievement Awards, as well as a 20th Century Style Icon award from the City of Milan. In July, they will receive the Spotify UK Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s 40th Anniversary O2 Silver Clef.

Alongside news of the tour, Multi-platinum superstars Duran Duran will release their 14th studio album, Paper Gods in the U.S. on September 18 and in the rest of the world on September 11 through Warner Bros. Records.

The songs on Paper Gods capture the duality and sense of conflict at the heart of Duran Duran’s music. “It really goes back to that strange early Duran mix: the hard-edged pop, coexisting with this dark, weird, experimental side,” John says. “That’s something that’s essential to all of us,” Nick adds. “It’s great to be able to lift people’s spirits — and your own — with a strong shot of pure pop, but the world we live in isn’t all just made of that stuff, so it seems natural to me that we have kept one foot in the darker, more Gothic side of life.” The album was mixed by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent. Paper Gods will be available for pre-order and “Pressure Off” will be available for purchase at all participating digital retailers and DuranDuran.com this week.

“We’ve allowed ourselves the time to make music that we can be proud of,” adds Le Bon. “I judge what we release by my favourite albums — Horses, Harvest, Let It Bleed, Blue, Transformer, Aladdin Sane. Those are classic albums. The only rule is it’s got to be music you can live with for the rest of your life.”

Tickets are on sale at 9am on Friday June 19. To book tickets, log on to www.echoarena.com or call the Echo Arena Box Office on 0844 8000 400. Those signed up to receive emails from Echo Arena will have the chance to buy priority tickets 24 hours earlier.

Tickets are available over the counter for all Echo Arena events and many other venues across the region, so just call in to TicketQuarter in Queen Square (Liverpool city centre, located within the Merseytravel office). Tickets prices start from £39.00 (including booking fees), and orders are subject to £2.25 handling fees.

Michael McIntyre bringing Happy & Glorious news for ACC Liverpool

The following is a story provided by ACC Liverpool:

Have I got Happy & Glorious news for you! After a three-year absence when he was off making hit TV shows, Michael McIntrye is now returning to what he does best: stand-up comedy.

This autumn, he is embarking on a major nationwide arena tour with his new show entitled, er, Happy & Glorious. Travelling the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland, the tour confirms Michael’s position as the most popular comedian on these islands.

His previous tour, Showtime, was the biggest-seller in the world in 2012, playing to over 640,000 people. That included a record-equalling ten-night residency at London’s 02 Arena, matching the figure set by pop superstar Rihanna the previous year. This tour may well prove even more successful.

Michael has also thrived in the DVD market. He has so far released three best-selling DVDs. 2008's Live and Laughing was the biggest selling UK debut stand-up DVD of its time; Hello Wembley, which in 2009 became the fastest-selling UK stand-up DVD of all time, a record it still holds; and 2012's Showtime, which beat its competitors to the Christmas Number One spot.

He has been making a name for himself on the international stage, too. In 2013 he performed to sold-out arenas in South Africa, Dubai, Norway, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Michael’s performance to an audience of 9000 in Johannesburg was the largest ever comedy show in Africa, and his run in Dubai won him the Time Out Best Night Out award.

It’s no surprise that his live show is such a hit all over the world. A wonderfully magnetic stage presence, Michael just dazzles audiences with fantastically funny material culled from his own life.

The critics agree. The Daily Telegraph has said that, “The man is quite simply top-to-toe hilarious ... Michael McIntyre is uproariously funny”. The Times called him, “Laugh out loud funny” while The Guardian describedhis routine as a “masterpiece of comic storytelling”.

You’ll be delighted to hear, Michael is equally magnetic in person, throwing off sparks like a Catherine wheel on Bonfire Night. An hour in his company simply flies by. It’s like being treated to a Command Performance – to an audience of one.

As he relaxes at home in North London in the run-up to the tour, Michael begins by telling me how thrilled he is by the prospect of taking Happy & Glorious on the road. “I really, really love stand-up. There is huge excitement about having done the work in lots of warm-up shows and knowing that the jokes are funny.

“I did a Comedy Gala in Brighton recently to 2,000 people, and it was so lovely to be out there again. It’s wonderful to be able to share my new jokes with people.”

The comedian, who has won enough awards to endanger the stability of his mantelpiece, adds that, “I can’t wait to be playing once again to a big room that is really enjoying the show. I’m looking forward to thinking, ‘If you’re loving that, wait till you hear this!’ I’m bringing everything to this show – voices, physical comedy, the works. That way, I can really paint pictures on stage.

“If it’s genuinely working, you hit sections that are very funny and the audience just lap it up. I now know that every time I reach a certain bit, they’ll applaud. My job is to get the whole show to that level. I’m so excited about it!”

What is special about Michael’s show is that he puts such time and effort into it. He lavishes a fabulous amount of TLC on it. But it’s worth all the work because after all the preparation has been done, he loves nothing better than welcoming audiences into the comic realm he has created.

Michael, who is very happily married to Kitty and is the proud father of two young sons, discloses that, “The last thing I want to do is just bang the show out. I want to say to people, ‘Come into my world’. I want to get them in the palm of my hand.”

The comedian goes on to outline some of the themes he will be addressing in Happy & Glorious. “You look at the things in my life, and they’ll be my material. Holidays, hotels, motorway services – that’s my life. Anything is ripe for comedy.”

Michael, who in 2010 published a best-selling autobiography, "Life and Laughing: My Story", carries on that, “I’ll be discussing health stuff and the fact that I’ve lost a lot of weight. And as always, I’ll be talking about my children. They’re in my life, and they’ll always be in my jokes.”

But there is one new element in Michael’s life that has gifted him an entire section of the show. The comic, who hosted the Royal Variety Performance last year, reveals that, “I’ve bought a house in the country that has given me twenty minutes of material.

“I used to flick through Country Life magazine – they tend to be in dentists’ waiting rooms. Over the years I’d look at page after page of gorgeous country cottages. It was a fantasy of mine to have an idyllic place in the rolling hills, so finally I bought one. But sadly I didn’t realise what I was getting into.”

The stand-up, who has fronted his own BBC1 programme Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, continues that, “When I flush the loo in London, I don’t for a moment think about the plumbing. It just happens.

“But it turns out that idyllic houses in the middle of nowhere don’t have plumbing. They have septic tanks that you have to empty once a year. They don’t highlight that in the estate agents’ brochures. People always say, ‘the previous owners left all their crap behind.’ Well, I’m literally in that situation!”

Michael, whose marvellously successful career also includes a stint as a judge on Britain's Got Talent in 2011, closes by reflecting on what he hopes he will achieve with Happy & Glorious. “I want to make the audience laugh till their faces hurt.”

When all’s said and done, Michael concludes, “I simply love making people laugh.”

For which we should be eternally grateful!
